When Ray was only eight years old his father, Lemuel, began having severe headaches. Lem went to doctors and even to Hot Springs Arkansas hoping for a cure.
Finally, he was taken to Mobile Infirmary. Ray and his mother took the train to Mobile to visit him. Lem died in the hospital on May 15, 1928, and was returned to Lucedale to be buried beside his father, James.
